Prayers carved in wood – Maramureș and its close surrounding is the land of the beautifully designed wooden churches and houses where the built heritage is in total harmony with the surrounding nature. Volcanic formations, lofty mountains and mighty forests inspired the creators of the wooden churches and it is the perfect place for spiritual replenishment.

Due to the multicultural nature of Transylvania further we will use the names of the localities in Romanian together with the Hungarian or in case, in Romanian together with the German.

Day 1
– travel to Baia Mare-Nagybánya
Baia Mare-Nagybánya – visiting the Mineralogy Museum, the biggest mineralogy museum in the region owning more than 16000 mineral specimens
Baia Mare-Nagybánya – sightseeing in the old center of the city
– Travel to Sighetu Marmației-Máramarossziget through the Gutâi-pass (987 m above sea level) – panorama view
Desești – the 18th century wooden church which was build as a Greek-catholic church now it is owned by the Orthodox church. UNESCO World Heritage site
Sighetu Marmației-Máramarossziget – visiting the open air Village Museum holding a great collection of 17-18th century wooden houses and churches presenting the old village life of the region

Day 2
Sãpânța – visiting the Happy Cemetery in Sãpânța quite unique in the world with its colorful tombstones with naive paintings describing, in an original and poetic manner, the persons that are buried there as well as scenes from their lives
Sighetu Marmației-Máramarossziget – sightseeing in the old center of the town
-Travel through the valley of Iza
-The monastery of Bârsana – actually a monastery complex built in a traditional Maramureș style used as a recreation and meeting center by the high officials of the Orthodox Church
Ieud – the 18th century Greek-catholic wooden church of Ieud – UNESCO World Heritage site

Day 3
-Hiking in the Rodnei Mountains going up with the ski-lift. We will walk cca. 1,5 km to the 80 meters high Horse’s Waterfall
-travel with the Mocanița (narrow gauge train with steam engine) is the only one in Europe still performing on a daily basis.
-Travel to Bistrița-Bistritz
-Visiting the traditional fully water-powered „washing machine” in Fiad
Bistrița-Beszterce – sightseeing in the city visiting the Lutheran church and its 75 m high tower, walking in the old Marktplatz
-Arrival to Cluj
